Thyroid Uptake and Scan. |
OVERVIEW
Patient Preparation To ensure accuracy of the tests, patients should not to be on any kind of thyroid medication prior to the exam. Depending on the medication, it may take 2 days to 4 weeks before this can be scheduled. Any x-ray dyes used in previous tests also needs to be communicated to the nuclear medicine department. WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?
The Scan 1. After the patient takes the capsule in the morning, the thyroid is scanned in the afternoon with 3 views about 5 minutes apiece. The patient will be in the Nuclear Medicine Department for about 15 minutes on the first day. 2. The patient will return to the Nuclear Medicine Department on the following morning for about 5 minutes for the 24-hour uptake. The Radiologist will send a report to the patient’s doctor.
