Ceramic Hip Surpasses Predecessor When the FDA approved the first ceramic-on-ceramic hip implant to be used in total hip replacement procedures, Eric R. Benson, MD already had experience with this revolutionary product. Dr. Benson participated in a nationwide clinical trial that involved 1,100 patients at 16 separate sites. His patients at Elliot Hospital were the first in New Hampshire to benefit from this new technology.
Stryker Howmedica Osteonics’ Trident® ceramic insert features an innovative multifunctional design with several features, including a titanium sleeve, which increases the ceramic insert strength by 50%, and a peripheral rim designed to protect the ceramic insert from impingement against the neck of the stem. Laboratory testing has shown significantly lower wear on the ceramic-on-ceramic bearings versus traditional hip replacement prosthesis.
Elliot Hospital Has Double Delivery With Two Laboring Sisters Elliot's Maternity Department Delivers A Whole New Look
Manchester, NH - Marne Bottenhorn and Leanne Kunz, both of Londonderry, are exceptionally close sisters… they live together, found out they were pregnant on the same day and even went into labor at the same time and delivered their first babies seven hours apart at the Elliot Hospital.
Marne, 33, had been on bed rest in the Elliot's Maternity Ward since October, when she went into pre-term labor at 22 weeks. She defied expectations and carried her baby to term. When Marne went into labor in late January, her sister Leanne, who was also carrying a full-term baby, rushed to be by her side. Nurses took one look at Leanne and saw that she, too, was going into labor.
Mary Jo Montanarella, MD, of Dr. Montanarella and Associates, treated both women throughout their pregnancies and delivered both babies seven hours apart. “I've never been in a situation like this,” Dr. Montanarella said with a laugh. “Leanne was in Labor and Delivery while Marne gave birth to her son, and once Marne delivered, she was by Leanne's side as Leanne had her baby boy.”
Both Marne and Leanne raved about the compassionate, personalized care they received at the Elliot Hospital.
“I received excellent care from the day I came in at 22 weeks,” said Marne, adding that the Elliot staff was “honest, supportive, efficient, caring and very empathetic in a potentially bleak clinical situation.” She emphasized that they made her feel comfortable during her months of bed rest at the hospital.
“The nurses were fantastic – not just medically, but they provided strong emotional support to my entire family,” Marne added.
Leanne, 25, said she “had a wonderful experience at the Elliot.” While watching Marne give birth, “the staff was so great. I was confident that everything would be OK when I delivered my baby.” She also praised the after-care options that the Elliot provides, especially the lactation specialists who check in regularly to ensure moms and babies are doing well.
And the Elliot Maternity Department is now delivering something else - a whole new look. Renovations to the department have begun, and the patients' rooms will soon resemble hotel rooms, with a bed for birthing partners, a mini refrigerator and a blue and green color palette. Once patient rooms are updated, the Labor and Delivery rooms and the Maternity lobby will also be renovated.
“We're excited about our Maternity Department's new look,” said Sue Leavitt-Gullo, RN, and the department Director. “We want all of our parents to have a positive experience here and we're confident that our guests will enjoy the added comforts in our new, beautiful rooms.”
The Maternity Center at Elliot Hospital is home to the largest birthing center in New Hampshire, with staff assisting in the birth of more than 2,600 new babies each year. We are proud to support each family in their new journey and offer family-centered care individualized to each family's needs. Our obstetrical service provides state-of-the-art care and is prepared to assist in any type of birth from hypnobirthing to the high-risk delivery of triplets.

MANCHESTER, NH—Elliot Health System donated more than 500 turkeys to New Horizons Shelter, New Hampshire Food Bank, Our Place, Child Health Services, Child and Family Services, and the VNA's Parent-Baby Adventure, just in time for the holiday season. Each year, during the Thanksgiving holiday, the health system provides turkeys for its staff members, physicians, and volunteers. Employees may choose not to pick up their turkey, and instead have the turkey donated to families and local charities in the Greater Manchester area. “We are happy to provide this tradition of distributing turkeys to our staff members,” said Suzane Quain, Human Resources Director. “Working in healthcare, the Elliot is aware of the financial struggles families in our community face. I am proud of our caring and compassionate team of individuals, who chose to donate their turkeys to families in need—it is such an important time of year to help those in need.” While picking up their turkey, staff had the opportunity to donate winter clothing to the Salvation Army. “The staff are always so thankful for the gesture of a holiday turkey, most leave behind bundles of winter clothing as a token of their appreciation,” said Quain. Elliot Hospital Breast Health Program receives Avon Foundation Grant for third year
MANCHESTER, NH — Elliot Hospital's Breast Health Program was recently awarded another grant from the Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund in the amount of $25,000.00 to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection of breast cancer. This is the third year that the Elliot has received Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund support for its work on this important health issue. The funds help to support the “Let No Women Be Overlooked” program, designed to provide free screenings for women between the ages of 16 and 64, who are uninsured or under-insured and meet a financial criteria. The Elliot holds a monthly clinic to provide these services; appointments can be scheduled through the Elliot's Cancer Resource Line at 663-5787. Elliot has also formed a partnership with the New Hampshire Minority Health Coalition, the Manchester Community Resource Center, and the Manchester Health Department. Together, with the help of these funds, they perform outreach to women of different ethnic backgrounds, bringing awareness of breast health, breast cancer prevention and early detection. Every woman is at risk for breast cancer. It is the most common form of cancer in women living in the United States. Thankfully, due to early detection with screening breast cancer is not the leading cause of cancer deaths in women, lung cancer is. However, thirty to forty percent of breast cancer deaths could be prevented if all women practiced the three early detection steps: The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends annual mammograms beginning at age 40; annual clinical exams beginning at age 20; and monthly breast-self exams also beginning at age 20. According to the ACS, the majority of women who do not comply with these guidelines are poor and underserved women. “Many factors, ranging from fear to lack of a physician's recommendation or reminder to practice monthly breast self-exams, keep women from practicing good breast health,” says Kelley Winn, RN, OCN, and Coordinator for the Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund. “There is a tremendous need to educate women in the Greater Manchester Community on the importance of practicing good breast health,” said Winn. “On behalf of the Elliot and in conjunction with the New Hampshire Minority Health Coalition, the Manchester Community Resource Center, and the Manchester Health Department, we are grateful that Avon shares in this mission and has chosen to support our programs.” Elliot Hospital is a member of Elliot Health System (EHS), the largest provider of comprehensive healthcare services in Southern New Hampshire. Elliot Hospital is a non-profit, charitable organization providing affordable, accessible, and advanced healthcare in Southern New Hampshire. It is the largest community hospital in New Hampshire and is home to the region's designated trauma center, a level 3 Newborn Intensive Care Unit, Elliot Physician Network, Integrative Medicine, the Regional Cancer Center, the VNA, Elliot 1-Day Surgery Center, the N.E. EMS Institute and the Senior Health Center. For more information about Elliot services, please call ELLIOT ON-CALL at 663-4567 or visit www.elliothospital.org . The Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund is administered by Cicatelli Associates Inc. to support community-based, non-profit breast health programs across the country. The Fund's National Advisory Board selected Elliot Hospital as one of the recipients nationwide in the 2004 cycle of Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund grants. These organizations were chosen based on their ability to reach women effectively, particularly minority, low-income, and older women, who are often medically underserved. Elliot 1-Day Surgery Center first To Bring Revolutionary Procedure to NH MANCHESTER, NH -- Varicose veins are known for their distinctive blue color, bulging appearance on the skin, and sometimes lead to ulceration. They afflict an estimated 10%-20% of the adult population-- the majority of whom are women. Although the condition is rarely life threatening, it is often painful and unattractive. Until now patients seeking relief from painful varicose veins underwent a “phlebectomy,” a procedure developed in the 1950s involving specially trained physician removing (often referred to as “stripping”) diseased veins through a series of very small punctures or incisions with a variety of specialized hooks. Patients then endured postoperative convalescence that lasted weeks. Elliot 1-Day Surgery Center and Lawrence Hoepp, MD are the first in the state to bring a revolutionary treatment to patients. The VNUS (pronounced venous) Closure Ò , a patented technology incorporates an outpatient technique to seal shut, the saphenous vein (one of the veins responsible for returning oxygen-depleted blood to the heart). When the vein is incompetent and not functioning normally, it results in varicose veins. The VNUS procedure generally takes approximately one hour, and most patients return to normal activity within a day or two. Overall, patients experience less pain, and are able to return to work, and can engage in normal activities very quickly. Elliot 1-Day Surgery Director, Christine Kelley, RN states “Dr. Hoepp has been performing the VNUS Closure since we began offering it in July, and our patients have responded very well.” Kelley adds, “The superiority of this procedure from a patient perspective is amazing. They [patients] can't believe the short recovery time.” Like other venous procedures, the Closure procedure involves risks and potential complications. Each patient should consult their doctor to determine whether or not they are a candidate for this procedure, and if their condition presents any special risks.

VNA Child Care & Family Resource Center starts nation's first preschool based on-site dental program Manchester—The VNA Child Care & Family Resource Center, in conjunction with the Poisson Dental Clinic will dedicate the nation's first on-site preventative oral hygiene program for preschoolers. Thursday, September 18 th from 6–7:00 p.m., supporters for this key initiative will join the staff and volunteers at the VNA Child Care & Family Resource Center in dedicating this first in the nation on-site preventive oral hygiene program to Sister Margaret Ahern. Dr. James Squires, Keynote speaker & President of the Endowment For Health will address the critical issue of access barriers to appropriate and timely dental care. In Manchester, the barriers often feel insurmountable. Access to oral health and dental treatments is the number one underserved area of health care in New Hampshire. In the NH Oral Health Data Report, 2002, 55% of Manchester's 2 nd and 3 rd grade students had a history of decay for the years 2001 –2002. 25% of these had untreated decay. At the VNA Child Care & Family Resource Center, staff see first hand the unnecessary pain and suffering from tooth decay that leads to problems in eating, dysfunctional speaking, poor self-esteem, and learning. In appreciation for Sister Margaret Ahern's years of dedication, leadership, and community service, the VNA Board of Trustees and the VNA Foundation voted to expand the VNA Child Care Center's nursing and family resource services to include an on-site dental program in the vision for a total health program. This program will meet the complex and underserved oral hygiene needs of the several hundred low-income children of the center without access to dental care. Children will receive care as early as infancy with full screenings and treatments beginning at age 2. Sally Dodge Adams, RDH, will incorporate education and training programs to the teaching staff, parents, and children on understanding the dynamics of tooth decay, proper hygiene and nutrition, use of fluorides, cavity-causing bacteria, and preventive techniques. Funding support for this program has been received from the VNA Foundation of Southern NH, the Endowment For Health, and the Northeast Delta Dental Foundation. The VNA Child Care & Family Resource Center, located at 435 South Main Street in Manchester, is a state-licensed, non-profit child care center providing services from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 52 weeks a year for up to 229 children a day. Since 1897, the Visiting Nurse Association of Manchester & Southern NH has played a significant role in the delivery of essential community services for people of all ages in the Greater Manchester area.
Elliot Hospital's 14 th Annual Newborn Intensive Care Unit Celebrates their “NICU Graduates” MANCHESTER, NH— On Sunday, September 7, Elliot Hospital staff and volunteers welcomed back nearly 1,000 former newborn intensive care unit patients and their families during their 14 th Annual NICU (Newborn Intensive Care Unit) Reunion. The NICU Reunion gives them the chance to see how the babies they once cared for have grown and who these little people have become.” Guests enjoyed a fun-filled day of activities including a Barbeque lunch, a “Kid's Corner” housing storytellers, clowns, puppeteers, face painters, and tie-dye, as well as special appearances by Ronald McDonald and Toys R Us mascot Jeffery the Giraffe. Also visiting the fun were The Manchester Police Department, including mounted police, as well as The Manchester Fire Department, and Rockingham Ambulance. Each showcased their respective vehicles for the kids to tour: a DARE Mobile and police horses, fire engine, and ambulance. Family members visited the “Parent's Patio” and received up-to-date information on women's health, birthing, and parenting issues from Kull & Griffiths OB-GYN and Midwifery and well as Dr. Manuel Peregrino, the NICU Medical Director. In addition, Dr. Peregrino educated families on the emerging trends taking place in the NICU. Parents and family members stopped by the Little Miracles Support Group to share past experiences with current members whose children are in the NICU. Elliot staff was also on hand to teach families with children in car seats how to make sure their car seats were properly installed. Major sponsors of the celebration include: Ross Pharmaceuticals, McDonald's, Mead Johnson, SMRT Architects, and Forest Pharmaceuticals. The Red Cross and March of Dimes were also on hand to support event. Elliot Hospital is home to the only Level III NICU in Southern New Hampshire, caring for more than 300 infants each year.
