    ELLIOT HOSPITAL HISTORY

In 1880, a bequest made by Mary Elizabeth Elliot, in memory of her husband, Dr. John Seaver Elliot, made possible the purchase of the land on which Elliot Hospital is located. Ten years later, construction of the hospital was complete and the facility officially opened.

The Elliot was the first “general” hospital in New Hampshire, and had the capacity of 25 patients. Throughout the years, Elliot Hospital has expanded its services to better serve the growing needs of the community. In 1909, a maternity department was built by the Elliot Associates, a group of fundraising volunteers. The following year, the Emily Smith Nurses’ Home was built as a nursing school. 1918 Saw the completion of a children’s ward. Cancer treatment began in New Hampshire in 1966, when Elliot Hospital purchased the state’s first radiation equipment. In 1980, Elliot Hospital was designated at the region’s trauma center. Nine years later, the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was opened.

In June 2002, Elliot Hospital opened the state’s only Senior Health Center— a new model in senior healthcare delivery designed to coordinate the needs of seniors at one location, it is also one of only a handful of its kind located throughout the country. The Senior Health Center is home to primary care physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, clinical pharmacists, as well as social workers, all specializing in geriatrics and dedicated to providing comprehensive care. On-site geriatric psychiatrists focus on behavioral issues associated with aging and are dedicated to helping seniors live happily by treating emotional concerns. Ancillary services such as physical and occupational therapy, laboratory and radiology (x-ray, bone density, and mammography) services, as well as regular visiting specialists complete the medical offerings. In addition, seniors can enjoy a fitness center, computer learning center, ongoing health education sessions, as well as clinics and screenings.

Elliot Health System is a leading provider of comprehensive healthcare services in the region and has established a reputation for its quality and state-of-the-art care over the years. Elliot Hospital’s attention to women’s and children’s health services has made the facility a leader with approximately 2,600 births a year—more than any other hospital in Northern New England. The Regional Trauma Center  is greater Manchester’s only Level 2 trauma center. The NICU, providing care to premature and sick babies, is the only one of three Level 3 NICUs in the state. The New England EMS Institute attracts students from around the Northeast to attend training.

Elliot Health System is distinguished in providing specialized services such as behavioral health, geriatrics, oncology, sleep evaluation, pain management, cardiology, wound care, urology, rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, and occupational health—all which serve a great need.

The Elliot Health System network encompasses a broad range of health services, touching the lives of our community in nearly every aspect of healthcare. Elliot Health System also provides services such as access to primary care physicians through the Elliot Physician Network, integrative or alternative medicine therapy, home health care through the Visiting Nurse Association of Manchester and Southern New Hampshire, Inc., assisted living facilities through Pearl Manor, Adult Day Programs and one-day surgery services, among others.

Elliot Health System has a long and healthy history of providing quality patient-focused expert care with a personal touch, and a vision for the future.
