DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING

Gallium Scan

OVERVIEW
A Gallium Scan is designed to diagnose or follow up on tumors or infection. We can use this for any organ where an inflammatory disease may occur.

WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW?
There are 3 appointment days for this exam. There is no risk of reaction to the isotope used (gallium). There is no preparation for this exam. The patient should have no barium studies one week prior to the Gallium Scan

The Scan

  1. Patient checks in to the radiology department at the time specified by the doctor’s office. The patient is injected with the gallium and may leave. They are instructed by Nuclear Medicine about when to return and what needs to be done in the meantime.
  2. The patient returns 48 hours later for the scan, which lasts about an hour.
  3. The patient returns 72 hours later for another scan that takes about 45 minutes to complete.

The Radiologist will send a report to the patient’s doctor.
