Thyroid Uptake and Scan.
OVERVIEW
Patient Preparation The patient should have nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before they come in to get the capsules. To ensure accuracy of the tests, patients should not to be on any kind of thyroid medication prior to the exam. Depending on the medication, it may take 2 days to 4 weeks before this can be scheduled. Any x-ray dyes used in previous tests also needs to be communicated to the nuclear medicine department.
WHAT ELSE SHOULD I KNOW? There is no reaction to the Thyroid capsules the patient will be taking.
The Scan The patient checks in to the radiology department at the time specified by the doctor’s office. 1. After the patient takes the capsule in the morning, the thyroid is scanned in the afternoon with 3 views about 5 minutes apiece. The patient will be in the Nuclear Medicine Department for about 15 minutes on the first day. 2. The patient will return to the Nuclear Medicine Department on the following morning for about 5 minutes for the 24-hour uptake. The Radiologist will send a report to the patient’s doctor.
