GENETIC COUNSELING:
Supporting health from one generation to the next . . .
What is genetic counseling?
Genetic counseling is the process of assessing risk factors for genetic
conditions, and providing information and support to individuals
and their families regarding:
- the probability of a genetic condition,
- what to expect through the life cycle if a person is diagnosed with
a genetic condition,
- how a genetic condition is passed along in the family,
- how
that condition may be prevented, treated, and managed.
Who are genetic counselors?
Genetic counselors are health professionals with graduate education and
experience in both medical genetics and counseling. They work as
members of a health care team to provide information and support
to families who have members with birth defects or genetic conditions,
and to families who may be at risk for genetic conditions.
- Genetic counselors also
- provide supportive counseling to families, · advocate for patients
with insurance companies and other organizations,
- refer individuals and families to local and state social services,
- connect individuals and their families with support groups for genetic
conditions,
- provide information to other health care professionals regarding genetic
conditions.
