Common Hereditary Cancer Syndromes

Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colon Cancer (HNPCC)
Caused by mutations in mismatch repair genes, including MLH1, MSH2 and MSH6.
Cancer risks include:

  • up to 80% lifetime risk for colon cancer
  • up to 70% lifetime risk for endometrial cancer
  • up to 12% lifetime risk for ovarian cancer

Look for:

  • colon cancer before 50
  • colon polyps before 50
  • endometrial cancer
  • ovarian cancer (without breast cancer)
  • gastric cancer

Increased surveillance options include:

  • annual colonoscopy
  • endometrial biopsy
  • endoscopy
