About the Center The mission of The Elliot Trauma Center is to provide immediate care and on-going intervention to patients suffering from a critical condition. It is very often the first contact a patient will have with The Elliot with the sudden onset of serious illness or traumatic injury. The Trauma Center team consists of specialists in nearly 20 disciplines that respond quite often upon notification by EMS prior to the patient reaching the hospital. In consultation with the Emergency Department physician, first responders will begin procedures prior to arrival at the hospital. Other patients arrive for care as "walk-ins" or with the assistance of family or friends. The Elliot Trauma Center provides twenty-four hour a day critical care services to Manchester and surrounding areas. The Elliot therefore serves as a community resource and referral center for all regional trauma related cases and serves a vast number of patients. Approximately 800 major trauma cases are seen each year. As a reflection of its size and depth of resources, The Elliot Trauma Center is designated by the state of New Hampshire as a Level lI facility. This means it conforms to standards defined by the American College of Surgeons, and sanctioned by state-level boards and departments of health. There is no higher level of trauma care than that defined for Level II facilities. The Elliot's Trauma Center is staffed with board certified Emergency Medicine physicians and surgeons with advanced training in trauma care. In addition, throughout The Elliot, nurses in the Emergency Department, OR, and ICU receive specialized training in trauma care and many of our nurses have achieved national recognition in Trauma, Emergency, Operative and Critical Care. Our staff keeps up-to-date on the latest advances in the care of trauma victims. In addition, the Elliot serves as the resource hospital for thirteen local Emergency Medical Service providers. The Trauma Center staff and equipment are mobilized to expedite patient care on arrival at the Center. If necessary, the patient is taken to an Operating Room where surgical procedures are carried out. The Multidisciplinary Team that forms this kind of two-tiered trauma response includes such specialists as:
