What is MRI

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an advanced medical imaging technique that produces cross- sectional images of the body without the use of x-ray radiation. The images are produced using a large superconducting magnet, radio frequency waves and a computer system.

How does it work? The human body contains an abundant amount of water. When these water molecules are placed inside a magnetic field they act like tiny magnets. The MRI magnetic field aligns these tiny magnets. Once a radio wave frequency is applied, the hydrogen atoms release energy that transmits as signal. A powerful antenna is also used to collect the signals. The signals are then processed by powerful computers and detailed images of the body are generated. The MRI exam is very noisy due to the gradient pulses that are used to determine the location of signals within the body.

YOUR SAFETY IS TOP PRIORITY

All of our facilities ensure safety utilizing FerrAlert technology

Prior to your exam a technologist will ask you to turn in front of a metal detector. This is painless and ensures a final measure of safety prior to the start of your exam.

MRI safe clothing will be provided for you to ensure you are free from metal or silver threading. Do not wear hairclips or hairpins. Leave your jewelry at home. Keep as many personal belongings at home. You will be provided a personal locker where you can lock up your clothing and valuables. If your MRI is of your head, do not wear eye makeup. Do not bring credit cards, keys or coins into the MRI exam room.

Hearing aids must be removed before entering the exam room. The magnet will cause damage to hearing aids.

There are many metal implants that are perfectly safe in the MRI environment and an MRI exam poses no known risk to most patients if appropriate safety guidelines are followed. However, for some patients, MRI may be inadvisable. It is very important that you communicate all your implant information when the MRI patient coordinator or technologist screens you. Please bring any cards issued for your implants to your MRI appointment.

If you have a cardiac pacemaker or internal defibrillator, in certain circumstances and only with MRI safe pacemakers and defibrillators; a coordinated MRI appointment can be made after thorough screening and approval from the Cardiologist and Radiologist.

These implants are affected by the magnetic field used in a MRI exam and special safety precautions must be followed.

Please let the MRI patient coordinator or technologist know if you have any of the following;

  • Cardiac Pacemaker/ defibrillator
  • Aneurysm clips
  • Diabetic Pump
  • Breast Tissue Expander
  • Herrington Rods
  • Metal plates, pins, or other metallic implants
  • Shrapnel from a gunshot wound
  • Ever been a metal worker
  • Permanent tattoo eyeliner
  • Cochlea implant
  • TENS unit (dorsal column stimulator)
Also, be sure to tell us if you are pregnant.

Elliot MRI takes pride in the work we do and would like to offer our services to aid you in your care. Please feel free to contact us at any of our locations or set up a time to come see the magnets. We will make every effort to help you have a positive MRI experience.
