Linacs – A linear accelerator is a device that accelerates electrons to near the speed of light. These highly energetic electrons can be used either to create highly penetrating X-rays or directly for therapy. Different types of cancers are best treated with different energies of X-rays or electrons. This depends largely on the depth of the area to be treated and the sensitivity of the surrounding tissues. All of our linear accelerators are equipped with what are called Multi-leaf Collimators. These consist of two banks of narrow but thick ‘leaves’ of tungsten, the position of each of which is computer controlled in order to customize the shape of each treatment field, exposing the targeted area, but shielding the surrounding healthy tissues.
The TrueBeam™ system is the latest advance in radiotherapy technology from Varian Medical Systems. Developed from the ground up to deliver powerful cancer treatments with pinpoint accuracy and precision, TrueBeam opens the door to new possibilities for the treatment of challenging cases such as cancers in the lung, breast, abdomen, and head and neck as well as other cancers that are treatable with radiotherapy. A multimodality linear accelerator that can treat with two types of X-rays and several energies of electrons. It is equipped with an electronic imager (called a ‘portal imager’) to help your treatment team be sure that they are targeting the correct spot.
An accelerator that is dedicated to treating with a single X-ray energy. Like the 21EX and the Trilogy, it also is equipped with an electronic portal imager for treatment field verification.
Located in Londonderry, this unit is multimodality – treating with either X-rays or electrons – and can create a CT scan just prior to treatment for comparison with the CT scan used for planning your treatment. This allows your treatment team to be confident that the targeted lesion is correctly positioned. The technology of the Trilogy allows your treatment team to deliver Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT)
This is our dedicated Stereotactic Radio-Surgery (SRS) unit. It treats with a single energy X-ray beam that can be very fine and directed with precision of less than one mm. It uses stereotactic X-ray imaging for extra positioning precision.
This unit delivers a lower energy X-ray beam which is best suited for very superficial lesions, such as skin cancers.
HDR / Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy is treatment from within. In these treatments, a radioactive source is placed either within the tumor or as close to is as can be achieved through a catheter or other type of applicator. Until this type of unit was enlisted for treatment, therapy often required admission to the hospital for several days. This unit -- the High Dose Rate Afterloader -- uses a very active source of radiation that is administered remotely and treatments last only a few minutes. The radioactivity is entirely self-contained and you will not be contaminated in any way upon completion of a treatment.
