Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: Prevention Starts with You

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, a time for our entire community to come together in support of prevention, early detection, and informed care. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer‑related death in the United States, but it is also one of the most preventable.  Yet more than 150,000 Americans are diagnosed with colon cancer every year. Treatment is most effective when changes are caught early. That’s why screening, recommended starting at age 45 for most adults, is important to your long term health.

Most adults should begin colorectal cancer screening at age 45. Regular screening can identify precancerous polyps long before they develop into cancer, making early detection a powerful lifesaving tool.

In addition to screening, simple lifestyle choices can support long‑term colon health. According to the CDC, staying physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, and choosing more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—while limiting red and processed meats—may help lower colorectal cancer risk and promote overall digestive wellness.

Throughout March, we encourage community members to talk with their loved ones and healthcare providers about personal risk factors and screening options. Early detection saves lives, and awareness begins with all of us.
