How a Walk in the Neighborhood Opened the Door to Jim Hawes' 50-Year Elliot Career

Known as the “mayor” of Elliot, Jim Hawes first walked through the hospital doors during a neighborhood walk in 1976. At the time, he was a junior at Memorial High School and joined the team as an environmental services technician II. One year later, after graduation, he became a full-time Elliot team member.

Back then, Elliot Hospital had just five floors, and visiting hours ended at 8 p.m. Nearly 50 years later, Jim has had a front-row seat to the organization's remarkable growth and transformation. Among the highlights of his career, he says, are the lifelong friendships he's made along the way, especially meeting his wife of 32 years, Patricia.

Fun fact: Service runs in the family. Jim's sister, Joanne, and her husband, Mark, as well as Patricia's brother, David, are all fellow Elliot team members.

Jim's impact extends far beyond his years of service. He is known for his unmatched knowledge of Elliot, unwavering work ethic and dedication to excellence. Through decades of change, he has remained a dependable presence in Environmental Services and a trusted resource for colleagues across the organization.

Those who know Jim appreciate more than just his expertise. He brings mentorship, perspective and a sense of humor that makes every shift a little brighter. His coworkers describe him as wise, witty and always ready with a little good-natured grumbling to keep everyone on their toes.

His best advice for new Elliot team members? Be yourself and don't be shy. As Jim puts it, "You never know how much a smile will mean to someone, and you can truly make their day."

A lyric from one of Jim's favorite bands, Rush, seems especially fitting: "Well, they call me the working man, I guess that's what I am." For five decades, Jim has embodied that spirit, showing up every day ready to work hard, support his teammates and take pride in what he does.

While now semi-retired, Jim still works at Elliot once or twice a week. When he's not at the hospital, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, including visits with his daughter, Kayla, and looks forward to visits from his brother and nephew.

Fifty years of service represents more than a milestone. It reflects the relationships built, the challenges overcome, and the countless contributions made behind the scenes. Jim's dedication has helped shape the Elliot we know today, and we are grateful for all he has given over the years.
