Solinsky Cancer Center Offers New Treatment Option for Osteoarthritis Pain

Patients living with chronic osteoarthritis pain now have access to a new treatment option through the Solinsky Cancer Center in Manchester, NH.

Low-Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT) is a non-invasive treatment designed to reduce inflammation and relieve pain caused by osteoarthritis, offering a potential alternative for patients who have not found relief through medications, physical therapy, or injections.

Treatment consists of six short outpatient sessions over approximately two weeks and does not require anesthesia or recovery time. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately following appointments.

"We're excited to offer another option for individuals struggling with chronic osteoarthritis pain," said Brian Knab, MD, executive medical director of oncology services at Elliot Health System. "For some patients, traditional treatments may no longer be providing relief, but they may not be ready for surgery. Low-Dose Radiation Therapy helps fill that gap by offering a non-invasive approach that can significantly improve comfort and quality of life."

Unlike the higher doses of radiation used to treat cancer, LDRT uses a much lower dose specifically designed to target inflammation within affected joints. The treatment is most commonly used for osteoarthritis affecting the knees, hips, hands, and shoulders.

Patients who may benefit from LDRT include those who:

• Have chronic osteoarthritis pain despite medications, physical therapy, or injections 
• Are exploring alternatives to surgery 
• Wish to delay joint replacement 
• Are not candidates for surgery due to age or other health conditions

The treatment is performed at the Solinsky Cancer Center and is covered by most insurance plans.

"Many people assume radiation therapy is only used to treat cancer," said Dr. Knab. "In reality, low-dose radiation has been used successfully for decades to help manage inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis. We're pleased to make this treatment available locally and provide patients with access to another option for pain relief."
