Prostate MRI

If you have been scheduled for a Prostate MRI you will be asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of your exam. After the necessary safety screening form is complete, MRI safe clothing will be provided for you. You will then be asked to empty your bladder and bowels prior to the start of the scan. You will be asked to lie on your back onto a coil which is an MRI camera. An additional coil will be placed on your pelvis to obtain increased signal.

Elliot at River’s Edge utilizes a 3 Tesla high field MR system that eliminates the need for an endorectal coil. We do not need to insert a camera into the rectum at our facility.

This exam requires the use of a contrast. The contrast agent Elliot MRI uses is called Gadavist. Gadavist will be administered by using an IV in either your arm or hand.

The prostate MRI takes 45 minutes and requires that you remain completely still as any motion may obscure the anatomy and information the Radiologist will use to make a diagnosis.

After the exam is complete you will be able to return to daily activity without any restrictions.

The images obtain during the MRI will be sent to a special system where a Radiologist dedicated to Prostate MRI will visualize color mapped images as well as time point graphs to dictate results. These results will be explained to you by your referring physician.

NOTE: IMAGING OF THE PROSTATE IS ONLY DONE AT OUR RIVER’S EDGE LOCATION
