Parkinson’s Disease Rehabilitation Program

The Elliot Rehabilitation Team is focused on helping those with Parkinson’s disease attain their fullest potential and minimize decline. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive movement disorder that may result in difficulty with daily activities and speech.

Our Treatments Address a Wide Range of Symptoms:

  • Slowness of movement/decreased size of movements
  • Rigidity
  • Tremor
  • Speech difficulties
  • Postural stability/balance/gait unsteadiness
  • Sensory processing issues (may not recognize movement as slow/small)
  • Emotional or cognitive changes

Our Approach

The Elliot Rehabilitation Team utilizes a variety of approaches that may include:

  • Comprehensive evaluation/assessment
  • Neuromuscular re-education to enhance optimal movement/balance
  • Therapeutic exercise to increase strength and mobility
  • Gait training to optimize walking ability
  • Home exercise programs to reinforce therapy goals.
  • LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) Big + LSVT Loud as appropriate. This is an intensive 4-week evidence-based program working on size (amplitude) of movements (Big) and speech (Loud).

Advanced Care/Expertise

The Elliot Rehabilitation Team consists of therapists and assistants with extensive experience in providing physical therapy for Parkinson’s disease. We have therapists with advanced training and certifications in LSVT and Board certified geriatric physical therapy (GCS).

The Elliot Rehabilitation Team collaborates with physicians and other health care providers. Completion of rehabilitation is only one step in managing Parkinson’s. The Elliot Rehabilitation Team will encourage further fitness and exercise at completion of program and discuss community resources as needed. The Greater Manchester Parkinson’s Disease support group is led by Elliot Health System therapists.
