Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation Program

The Elliot Rehabilitation Service team consists of specially trained physical therapists, providing compassionate care with pelvic floor dysfunction treatment for men and women of all ages. 

Individuals who experience the above problems describe a significant negative impact on quality of life and the performance of necessary functional activities including employment, sitting, driving, household chores, recreation, entertainment, travel, socializing, intercourse, intimacy, urination, defecation, day to day physical comfort and choice of clothing. These problems generate fear, depression, anxiety, frustration and isolation.

Common Diagnoses We Treat

Common problems referred to the pelvic floor physical therapist include:

  • Urinary and fecal incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Constipation
  • Pediatric encopresis
  • Painful bladder and voiding dysfunction
  • Painful intercourse/vulvar pain

 

  • Male and Female pelvic pain
  • Prostatitis, testicular and penile pain
  • Pudendal neuralgia
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Postoperative urologic, gynecologic and colorectal dysfunction
  • Coccyx pain
  • Musculoskeletal disorders of pregnancy and post-partum

Our Approach

After a thorough evaluation a treatment plan is developed with the patient’s collaboration and may include:

Therapeutic exercise to both strengthen and relax the pelvic floor and sphincter mechanism

  • Intravaginal or intrarectal surface electromyography, i.e., biofeedback
  • Electrical stimulation

Functional training

  • Retrain defecation mechanics
  • Improve voiding function
  • Use of pelvic floor and sphincters during functional activities
  • Vaginal dilators used independently

Hands on manual therapy to include massage, connective tissue and myofascial release techniques

  • Education for self-management

Advanced Care/Expertise

Pelvic floor physical therapy requires advanced continuing education and training beyond a degree in physical therapy. The Elliot Hospital is the first facility in New Hampshire to offer this specialized care. Our specialized physical therapists manage this patient population exclusively.
