Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is one of the many viruses that is present in our communities, especially during cold and flu season. RSV is the most common reason infants under 12 months are admitted to the hospital. For older adults, an estimated 60,000-120,000 are hospitalized each year due to RSV. Amidst the COVID pandemic, Paula Margenau discovered a concerning lump in her breast, no larger than a pencil tip. Initially brushed off by a primary care provider, Paula persisted when she felt the lump growing. Recent data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention paints a grim picture: 48,183 individuals lost their lives to suicide in 2021 alone, translating to approximately one suicide every 11 minutes. Countless others wrestled with the idea, exploring it as a potential escape. At the beginning of the opioid epidemic in New Hampshire in 2015, Elliot Hospital recognized the importance of addressing the rapid rise of death and illness surrounding addiction. Sadly, the epidemic has not lessened today. Throughout it all, The Elliot has delivered on its commitment to support people in our community impacted by this disease. In July of 2023, New Hampshire saw the highest overdose rate since the beginning of the epidemic. People who are struggling with addiction are not intentionally overdosing. Manchester, NH – Elliot Health System announces it was selected for a competitive U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant to expand access to Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Substance Use Disorder, to reduce substance misuse and overdose. The grant provides $2.25 million over three years to support lasting recovery of people from our community. This is called the Live Free project, and includes collaboration among Makin It Happen Coalition for Resilient Youth, Hillsborough County Superior Court North, Hillsborough County Department of Corrections, and New Hampshire Department of Corrections. Elliot Health System is partnering with Manchester Community College and ApprenticeshipNH to provide an opportunity for students to launch a career as Licensed Nursing Assistants (LNAs). After eight paid weeks of intensive classroom study, lab work, and a clinical practicum with a mentor, students are eligible to sit for the Nurse Assistant Competency Evaluation (NACE) national exam and become licensed LNAs. Elliot Cardiovascular Consultants now offers the CardioMEMS sensor. This tiny device enables cardiac patients to be monitored for worsening heart failure from the comfort of their home. Research indicates that patients living with heart failure have better outcomes when their therapy is guided by pulmonary pressure monitoring such as the CardioMEMS sensor, with a significant reduction in heart failure hospitalizations, emergency visits, and death.
The CardioMEMS sensor is intended for use by people experiencing Class II heart failure and those with blood tests indicating elevated biomarkers for worsening heart failure. Read More...

The Board of Trustees of SolutionHealth, parent organization of Elliot Health System and Southern New Hampshire Health, has formed a joint venture with Acadia Healthcare, a leading provider of behavioral healthcare services across the U.S. to build a new behavioral health hospital in southeast New Hampshire.
This $60 million investment in the community will significantly increase access to specialty behavioral healthcare, as the new hospital will have 144 beds and a full array of inpatient behavioral health programs and will be carefully designed, creating a therapeutic and welcoming environment for patients, staff and clinicians. Hybrid Operating Room Opens for Range of Surgical Needs
Elliot Hospital has completed its first surgery using a newly installed hybrid operating room (OR). A hybrid operating room is a surgical theater that is equipped with video, monitoring and advanced medical imaging devices that are fully integrated and collaborative with each other. Elliot Health System announces that Lindsey Whelan, MS, RN, CCRN, TCRN, ACCNS-AG, who serves in the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Department, is being recognized by Rivier University as its 2023 Outstanding Nurse/Healthcare Professional.
Lindsey graduated from Rivier University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and earned a Master of Science in Nursing from Regis College. As Trauma Program Manager, she maintains Elliot Hospital’s accreditation and program development as a Level II Trauma Center. Lindsey joined Elliot Hospital in 2008 as a staff nurse on the Fuller Unit. Today, Elliot Hospital unveiled its expanded and renovated Emergency Department at an open house held onsite. This multi-phase construction project, which began with a groundbreaking ceremony in June 2021, officially opens to the community on June 13. The cornerstone of the renovation project included a 22,000 sq. ft. expansion of the existing building that allows for a clinically superior patient environment with enhanced privacy, and improved operational flow for staff and patients. The technology will be used for general, gynecological, and urological procedures, and it is in addition to their current total joint MAKO robotic system. “Over time, I started to have difficulty breathing. I have COPD, and I was concerned that something else might be happening in my lungs. In 2018, I ended up in the hospital because my breathing was labored. Scans showed that I had nodules in both lungs – the question was if they were cancerous. To this day, Sandy McAndrews of New Hampton, NH, still has a hard time believing that she had cancer. Starting as a teenager, she lived a clean and healthy life. She competed in heavy weightlifting contests, made sure she did six hours of cardio every week and at least two hours of weightlifting a day. She had a healthy diet, never smoked, or did drugs. Read More...May 3, 2022 - Parents never want to need a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) when they are welcoming their new baby into the world. But for those who have a sick baby who needs care, Elliot Hospital’s NICU team is a welcome and comforting resource.
Throughout the state of New Hampshire, Elliot Hospital is only one of two facilities with specially trained providers who can treat preterm infants as early as 23 weeks gestation up through infants born after their due date. Elliot’s NICU treats babies who are transferred from other hospitals throughout the state—about two-thirds of the babies who are transported to Elliot Hospital are critically ill.
