Substance Use Disorder Services staff at The Elliot assesses, treats, and supports individuals with SUD who are in or seeking recovery. Our multidisciplinary team includes licensed mental health and substance use clinicians, psychiatric providers, RNs, case managers, and recovery support staff. Our team also works closely with primary care providers to ensure continuity of care.
A substance use disorder (SUD) is a mental disorder that affects an individual’s brain and behavior, leading to the inability to control their use of substances like prescription and over-the-counter medications, alcohol, and illegal drugs. Addiction is the most severe form of SUD.
Many people struggling with substance use disorder can be treated in an outpatient setting. Depending on your unique needs, you may be referred or choose to participate in our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) , or Maternal Opioid Misuse (MOM) Program.
The Elliot’s Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provide individual and group-based treatment of co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. PHP and IOP are for individuals who need care that is more intensive than individual outpatient programs but not as intensive as residential treatment.
Patients attend IOP on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for 12 sessions. PHP patients attend the program Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for four weeks.
Individuals can self-refer to PHP and IOP or get a referral from a provider or Doorway staff.
The MOM program is available to women who are currently pregnant and up to two years postpartum, have opioid misuse disorder, and who are eligible for Medicaid. By serving as an access point to these resources, the MOM program helps new and expecting mothers and their babies have good health during pregnancy and beyond.
Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is the use of prescription medications in combination with counseling for the treatment of substance use disorders. MAT is used in the treatment of both opioid and alcohol use disorders. The medications work by balancing brain chemistry, blocking the euphoric effects of alcohol and opioids, and decreasing physical cravings. Commonly prescribed medications include oral Naltrexone, Buprenorphine-Naloxone (Suboxone), Buprenorphine (Subutex), and extended-release Buprenorphine (Sublocade, Brixadi).
