High Volume in the Emergency Department

Emergency Departments (EDs) stand ready to provide care 24/7/365 for the community, and with increased respiratory virus transmission in addition to other life-threatening conditions, we are currently seeing a high volume of patients.

Wait Times

We know that waiting for care for yourself or a loved one can be extremely difficult. We are working our absolute hardest to care for all our patients who seek emergency care as we see an uptick in respiratory infections, flu and COVID. We remain committed to providing exceptional emergency medical care every hour, every day.

Why is there a wait?

Sometimes, people seeking help face long wait times before being seen. Reasons for this include the increased need for care that exceeds available capacity of staff, available inpatient beds, tests and more. Another reason is that some patient require care for a lower acuity need than others who are waiting. The Emergency Department uses a triage system to prioritize acuity and potentially life-threatening conditions, and not always on arrival time.    Watch a helpful video about the triage process below.

Know Your Options for Care

Please help us by using our Emergency Department only for emergencies. For life-threatening conditions including heart attack, stroke, or serious traumatic injury, seek care in the Emergency Department or dial 9-1-1. The Elliot provides a range of emergency care services.

Contact Your Primary Care Provider

We strive for everyone to have a primary care provider (PCP) and even when you have a PCP, you can experience health issues outside of business hours. In these cases, visiting our new Elliot VirtualER service may be a more convenient way to get treatment for acute, non-life-threatening health problems without the long wait and more costly bill that comes from an ED visit.

Convenient Care with Elliot VirtualER

Patients conveniently connect on screen with our own Elliot ER physicians via a computer from home, or mobile device from anywhere within New Hampshire through VirtualER. This service is for non-life-threatening health problems only.
