Exceptional Beginnings:
Childbirth and Parenting Education at the Elliot Hospital

Whether you are soon to be a new parent or a growing family, Elliot Hospital Childbirth Education provides great programs to assist you to learn about pregnancy, birth and caring for your baby. Our Registered Nurses and Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) bring knowledge, compassion, and years of experience to your learning.

Our goal is to empower, educate and excite you! We invite you to learn from and ask questions of the nurses who will be working alongside your provider to care for you and your babies during your delivery experience. Classes are also a wonderful opportunity to meet and connect with other parents within our community.

COVID 19 UPDATE: Please note at this time, non-infectious patients, visitors and vaccinated staff are no longer required to wear a mask. Please note that we will continue to provide masks at our facilities for all who need or want to wear them. We will continue to offer both in-person and virtual learning options to meet all comfort levels. Currently, tours will only be offered as a part of our “Learn to Labor” in-person classes.

Childbirth Classes

Learn to Labor: This class is taught by our certified childbirth educators who are also Registered Nurses within the Elliot Hospital Maternity Center. It is designed to help our patients prepare for their childbirth experience, and support partners prepare for their crucial role.

This class covers the following topics:

  • 3rd trimester pregnancy changes
  • The birth process
  • Coping strategies for labor, including positioning techniques, relaxation strategies, breathing patterns and pain medication options.
  • Cesarean delivery and early postpartum care.
  • Tour of the Labor and Delivery and Maternity hospital units.


Caring for Baby: This class is taught by a Registered Nurse and is designed to prepare expectant parents on how to care for and feed their newborn during the first six weeks of life.

This class covers the following topics:

  • Normal newborn procedures and tests; newborn screen, circumcision, and hearing test
  • Caring for your newborn; including, bathing, diapering, skin care, and dressing
  • Safety; safe sleep and car seat safety
  • Choosing a healthcare provider and symptoms to report

Breastfeeding Basics: Taught by a lactation consultant from Elliot Hospital’s Maternity Center, this class introduces parents to the benefits of breastfeeding and how to get off to a good start.

This class covers the following topics:

  • Comfortable positions for breastfeeding.
  • Avoiding common issues with nursing.
  • The basics of pumping and storing breastmilk.


Class Schedule and Registration

Our classes fill up quickly so we recommend scheduling at around 24 along in your pregnancy. We suggest planning to take our classes within the 30-35 week timeframe of your pregnancy, although that is certainly up to you and we welcome you to join us at any time.

Hospital Pre-Registration

Please call within 30 days of your due date at (603) 663-5663 to pre-register anytime Monday-Friday 7 AM – 5 PM. Our staff will need your insurance information (so please have your card handy), as well as your due date and OB/GYN practice. In most cases this is a very brief 5-10 minute phone call.
